MIDEX – new GLS partner in the Middle East

Amsterdam, 17 September 2009. Since end of August 2009, MIDEX INTERNATIONAL (MIDEX) has been delivering GLS parcels in the Middle East. In the opposite direction, MIDEX uses the GLS network for deliveries in Europe.

“Through our partnership with GLS, MIDEX is now connected to one of the strongest European parcel networks and this will give us an edge on competition”, says Dr Issam Khairallah, President of MIDEX. “It is a cooperation between two companies that consistently focus on providing high quality services.”

The company covers 14 countries for GLS: United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen. MIDEX has a longstanding special experience in customs clearance. “This is an area of particular importance in the region”, says Rico Back, CEO of GLS. “Thanks to the cooperation, we achieve regular delivery times for our Global Business-Parcel in the above-mentioned countries of only three to four days.”

Fleet of freighters

MIDEX is specialised in the rapid movement of documents and parcels – from collection to delivery. For a large part of the transport, MIDEX uses the services of its affiliate MIDEX AIRLINES (based in Dubai). The airline was founded in January 2007 and has become one of the most efficient airfreight service provider in the region. Today, MIDEX AIRLINES operates a fleet of seven freighters (six A300B4-203Fs and one B747-228F). MIDEX and MIDEX AIRLINES belong to MIDEX INTERNATIONAL Group. In 2008, the Group achieved a turnover of 4.2 billion euros with approximately 25,000 employees.

“MIDEX is a strong partner. We see the cooperation as a very gratifying expansion of our contractual alliances outside of Europe”, says Rico Back. “Through our new partner, GLS customers are linked to the entire Arabian Peninsula and parts of the Levant and northern Africa.”

Connecting the regions

The IATA-licensed GLS Airport Office at Frankfurt Airport processes the parcels from Europe and sends them to MIDEX’s hub in Dubai, where MIDEX receives the parcels and forwards them to their final destinations. Shipments to the United Arab Emirates are fed directly into MIDEX’s national delivery network.

The use of modern IT and communications technology is standard at MIDEX – as it is with all GLS partners. The track & trace systems of both companies are already linked to each other so that customers can track their parcels from pickup to delivery.
